Sunder Land

A very interesting presentation this week by Mr Robert Moon this week about “The Sunder Land”.
Robert started by relating the features around from the bronze age through the years to the present (Bronze Age boats, Roman Villars an R&R area for the roman troops etc.
The importance of Sunderland, the largest shipbuilding town in the world. Largest town in the world, the largest town in County Durham and the second largest town between Leeds and Edinburgh, dates back to Saxon times, though relics of 'Prehistoric times have been discovered in the district. A few evidences of Roman occupation have been discovered (the River Wear was known to the Romans as “Vedra".
The first date of importance in the town's long history is 674 when Benedict Biscup established the monastery of Wearmouth, dedicating the church to St. Peter.The Church of St Peters Monkwearmouth was the home of the venerable Bede and Sunderland was the largest builder of ships in the world at that time.
The Elizabethan customs house in 1824 was given permission to trade by the Bishop of Durham, Lambton house Old Sunderland, Robert showed many photos of housing local industry Glass production being one of the largest in the country and coal transporting, there are several Blue Plaques in Sunderland commemorating the place of great significance if the life of the town.
