Bowes Museum

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 3rd June 2015.

The Presentation this week was by Mr. Ray Calboutin (our Programme Secretary) due to the booked speaker having to go into hospital, entitled "Bowes Museum" which covered an earlier visit to the museum this year.

Ray started off by telling us that like all museums the items on view are constantly changed from item in store and this is to assist in enhancing special exhibitions that are currently on show.

The talk started at the front gates and proceeded to travel through each floor, room and gallery showing the current exhibits on display with comments on various sections of special interest, namely the Silver Swan Automaton (designed to provoke interest due to its novel/extraordinary nature which is demonstration at 2pm each day, the 3 large portrait galleries which show some of Josephine’s own paintings as well as old masters.

The other large exhibition was on Fashion with textiles and Birds of Paradise used in clothing as the main themes, one section even displayed Religious Garments high fashion for the Church and State.

A visit down to the Toy Room showed dolls, houses, bears and many board games of times gone by.

The talk ended with videos of the Silver Swan in action on the day compared with another copy from 2 years ago which was the last time he had been there.

A very interesting talk from Ray which was well received by our members.
